”Begin to explore your own style and voice, not mine, let’s turn your camera from a ‘photo-copier’ into an artist’s brush with unlimited potential and true expressions…” – Alex
On the day…
The workshop will take place in Zurich This Summer (Date TBC) starting at 1700 shooting into blue hour 2145, where Alex will present his professional portfolio in detail, in a ‘How I shot it’ format, revealing/hinting at some of the techniques he will be teaching throughout the day, and at the same time brief you on the objectives of this workshop. He likes to run his workshops as ‘assignments’ with the goal of presenting usable images to a fictitious client at the completion… (and to add to your personal and professional portfolios)
Taking you though the entire process of working with a professional International Fashion Model, you will indeed be taken right the way through the process, from the pre-shoot planning (Mood boarding, location scouting) to makeup, styling and much more…
learning the following along the way:
Metering and exposure, why exposure is everything! how to see the world differently and express this vision to your viewer…
Why exposure begins to talk to the soul, tricking and overpowering the ‘trained mind of both photographer and viewer’ powerful manipulation of experience by subject matter related exposure.
Composition techniques combined with exposure, focus and speed like you’ve never explored before.
Looking for, identifying and creating dynamic compositions on the go, for that ‘reportage look’ whilst avoiding the typically boring/posed images. (lots of candid ‘street’ scenarios) Remember the term ‘STACKING’
Accurately & confidently selecting and using various focal lengths, with a variety of focusing techniques for different lighting, motion and environmental situations. (Correct lens selection is EVERYTHING!)
How to shoot in the ‘real world’ and ‘on the fly’ with varying lighting conditions and moving subjects on location.
How to effectively break the ‘Traditional Photographer Mindset’ and rules to achieve more visceral and striking imagery, and find your own unique style with analogue photography.
Learn how you shoot and process is 100% in your control like a brush, (And how this is lost or at least very different in Digital) no one can replicate your style or message when masterfully executed, and why this is important and empowering for you and thus others…
Learn how to explore expression through visceral analogue mediums which Alex believes resonates with and affects the viewer very differently than an obviously digitally created image…
You will begin to explore ‘your own style’, Alex will help you turn your camera from a ‘photo-copier’ to an artist’s brush.
Understand why Alex often preps for weeks before his shoots and how this affects his analogue workflow…
How to use available light in various ways, for either fill or artistic flair, as well as incorporating existing or external light sources, to enhance your creations.
The final part of this day will then be spent reviewing the day and discussing ideas questions, (catching up over a drink and maybe Pizza somewhere nearby) as well as going over any aspects you might want to revisit or discuss again.
There will of course all along the way be plenty of In-depth set up, manual control and familiarisation of the various features unique to your analogue camera, as well as basic manual photography.
We will also discuss and explore the development and scanning process and why this is critical to achieving striking results, you may have already shot the most incredible image in analogue, but if you didn’t sit and explain how you wanted it processed and scanned, (and it didn’t come out in an impactful way) it all goes to waste… deep discussion, can talk for days on this…
What to bring? Alex will likely be using his 35mm Leica M2 & Contax G cameras, as well as his Rolleiflex 6×6 Medium Format camera, you are advised to bring along any 35mm or medium format analogue cameras and plenty of film!
